How to Keep Your Backyard Fire Safe & Contained | SERVPRO® of Beaver County

7/21/2022 (Permalink)

Safety During a Backyard Fire If you have experienced fire or smoke damage, contact SERVPRO of Beaver County.

A backyard fire is one of the great enjoyments of being a homeowner. Sitting around the flames while telling stories and eating good food is just one of the ways you can use it.

Many people use fires for cooking meals, keeping bugs away and obviously as a way of burning excess debris. However, these fires that seem harmless are actually a great danger to the surrounding region.

The National Park Service reports that humans are responsible for nearly 85% of wildfires.

In Pennsylvania, we see a high risk of wildfires, due to the high heat in the warmer months combined with our thick areas of forests and foliage. This means that we need to be extra cautious when lighting fires outdoors, otherwise we could start the next outdoor disaster.

This reality doesn’t mean that we can’t enjoy a fire at home or that we shouldn’t burn dead leaves. It tells us that we all should take the proper safety measures and never take additional risks when attempting to have a controlled fire on our own property.

Recreational Fire Hazards

As we mentioned previously, every kind of fire comes with risks, but fireworks and campfires are two of the leading causes of wildfires. On average, grills start 8,800 home fires each year, typically caused by improper use. It’s important to check the propane or coals before leaving the grill unattended after use.

When constructing a campfire it’s important to pick a spot with ample space around it so that nothing else catches on fire. Ensure at least a 30-foot buffer between any structure or vehicle, and only use wood to keep the fire going so that you can reduce the risk of a spread.

Additionally, if you have a backyard fire pit, it’s important to treat this equipment with the same caution as any other fire. This includes keeping it away from any overhangs and only placing it on rocks or dirt.

Many people choose to get rid of their household or construction waste with fire, but you should never do this—only burn approved firewood to reduce your personal risk.

Fireworks are legal in Pennsylvania, but this doesn’t mean you should carelessly launch these dangerous explosives. Make sure that your fireworks are only being launched on your own private property, and watch where the debris falls so that you can reduce the risk of an outdoor fire.

Other Outdoor Fire Hazards

Although fires can be risky, they can still be useful in our area. We see a lot of falling leaves during the fall, and this can significantly increase the chance of wildfires when the buildup becomes too much.

Because of this, burning your debris might be the most effective way to keep your property clean and safe from fires.

Our local government has some complex ordinances set up to prevent wildfires from occurring, which can make it difficult to legally burn your debris. Here is a page from the Beaver County Fire Department that can help you perform an outdoor burn without breaking the law or putting our region at risk.

Along with clearing dead debris from your property, landscaping your yard to stop the spread of flames can greatly reduce the chance of suffering wildfire damage near your home. Most importantly, knowing what to burn and adhering to the safety guidelines can help you stay safe with fires.

Many people keep their extra gasoline or oil stored in the garage or shed. However, this can actually put your home at a greater risk of suffering a fire. Make sure that you only store these dangerous materials in proper containers with safety locks that guard against leakage or curious children and animals.

It’s a smart idea to check your weather updates for any reason not to have a fire. High winds and dry conditions mean that your fire has a greater chance of spreading beyond your control, and you should think about postponing it.

If you do experience fire damage, call SERVPRO of Beaver County right away. We have 247 availability with a quick response to any kind of disaster. We always attempt to restore as much of your home as possible as soon as we possibly can.

Burn safely outdoors. And save some chocolate for us! If you have experienced fire or smoke damage, contact us today to get restoration started faster.

Knowing These Storm Alerts Could Help You Stay Safer | SERVPRO® of Beaver County

7/12/2022 (Permalink)

Our national alert system uses 42 different kinds of weather alerts, spread out between seven categories that cover all types of weather events. This is too much information for most people to take in, especially when you’re sheltering from a severe storm.

It’s important to know what the various kinds of alerts for our area mean, as it will allow you to prepare for those most. Additionally, you can take steps that will help prevent damage to your home and property.

It is important to have a basic understanding of all weather events, but it’s essential for you to know what kind of weather hits us in Pennsylvania most often.

How Alerts Are Issued

Most Americans are not aware of how the alert system works at all, but many know that weather forecasts are only predictions. The rest of the equation, the severity, location and size of storms are all complex and require in-depth analysis to discover.

The National Weather Service handles these tasks for us, including forecasting and issuing all alerts or warnings. Our country is split into six sections, each covered by its own regional headquarters, along with hundreds of local offices. Here in Beaver County, we receive our weather information from the Eastern Regional headquarters.

The NWS employs the assistance of countless meteorologists and other specialists who collect and analyze data to create forecasts. Some of their methods include satellite imaging and thermal and seismic sensors, but the instruments used vary depending on the type of weather. The goal is always to perform a thorough analysis and provide quality predictions for us here in the United States.

The Most Important Alerts to Understand

The first principle that everyone should know is the meaning of a “watch” and a “warning.” You will see these words used in almost every weather event, like floods, tornadoes, hurricanes and thunderstorms.

watch is when a storm is coming close to your area, and it has the potential to be dangerous for people and property. These alerts will often cover large swaths of land, in an attempt to keep everyone aware of what’s happening around them.

warning means that danger will be here very soon, and you must take immediate action to stay safe from it. These alerts will only cover a city or county and are highly specialized so that everyone in the path of danger can stay safe.

You should also make sure to read up on what kind of weather we see here in Pennsylvania, and in Beaver County specifically. We see an average of 179 days of precipitation each year, so nearly half of the year is stormy.

This indicates that water damage and common storm damage are two of the things we should be preparing for.

Protecting Your Home During a Storm

Knowing how to decipher weather alerts is the best way for you to plan out your course of action for surviving the storm. There are some steps that you can take to keep your home more protected as well.

Clearing your gutters and securing loose items outside are easy things that can make your home tougher against a disaster. Loose items will often be thrown into the walls or roof of the home, opening it up to further damage.

Once the storm has passed, take plenty of photos if your home is damaged. Afterward, give SERVPRO of Beaver County a call, because we’re here 247 for any and all cleanup and restoration needs.

Again, as you learn more about the weather common in our region, the more prepared you can be for it. Having knowledge of the alerts used and staying in touch with your local officials are additional ways to stay safe from extreme weather.

Commercial Damage & How Your Business Could Be Affected | SERVPRO® of Beaver County

6/17/2022 (Permalink)

In the United States, our businesses are the lifeblood on which our country is built. All of us interact with multiple businesses each and every day.

Business owners have to manage more than simply the profit and loss of their company—they also have to focus on all of the tiny details that could potentially affect their business. So when disasters happen, it can be a disastrous burden for a business to bear.

We’ve witnessed a steady increase in natural disaster damage as time goes on. The NCEI reported that over the last five years in the United States, there was approximately $153 billion worth of damage annually, which is a meaningful jump from the last period of data.

Here in Beaver County, severe storms happen year-round. We see the extreme winter weather and the high-intensity events that come during the warmer months as well. This storm just last year was centered in Pittsburgh but was caused substantial damage all the way here in Beaver County.

Thankfully, we’ve collected some important information on the most common causes of commercial damage around the country, and we hope that it can help you better prepare your business for a disaster.

Water Damage

Excessive levels of water and moisture are major threats to business across the United States. Water damage is sometimes caused by nature and other times it can be due to manmade causes and simple appliance malfunction.

One of the causes of water damage is flooding. Seeping through unsealed areas of the exterior, water can affect the foundation. Consider utilizing landscaping to guide water away from the building.

Water damage is not limited to fast-acting waves, however. It can damage your property over extended periods due to seemingly minor leaks. You should routinely inspect your facility’s plumbing and walls to ensure that you don’t have damage taking place over time and to stay ahead of the problem.

Storm Damage

In the event of a storm, an entire area’s businesses and homes are affected. Even a less severe storm can take out power or send branches and rocks flying to damage your business.

Typically, storms carry winds that range from 10 to 45 mph, but severe storms like those that we see in the warmer months can produce winds of over 100 mph. Storms like these can tear trees out of the ground and throw damaging debris around like nothing.

Installing storm-grade window and door covers can limit the damage a storm can bring, but these measures often take extensive time and funding to complete.

Before resorting to the extremes, you can perform simple tasks like checking your window and door seals and performing regular inspections of the property that help prevent damage from going unaddressed.

Additionally, it’s a good idea to clear your property of any loose items and dead trees to avoid the chance of them causing damage in the event of a storm.

Know Who to Call

While it may seem cumbersome at first, taking the steps to protect and prevent storm and water damage is worth it in the long run.

Closing down to make repairs is not something any business owner wants to do. Thankfully, we have 247 availability, and our experts quickly respond to ensure that the proper restoration plan is enacted.

If you have experienced damage to your business or want to learn more about our commercial damage restoration services, contact us today. We’re here to act fast, 247.

Simple Steps That Can Reduce Your Risk of Suffering A House Fire | SERVPRO® of Beaver County

6/6/2022 (Permalink)

Interior view of a room with items completely destroyed by fire If your home is damaged in a house fire, SERVPRO of Beaver County is here to help. Contact us for any fire restoration need.

We have all seen the news over the past few years detailing how wildfires are becoming more common and more serious—well, so are house fires. So far in 2022, the American Red Cross has responded to over 20,000 house fires, which is only a small fraction of the total fires in the United States this year.

Most modern homes already have complete coverage from smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms, but make sure that you have a smoke alarm in every bedroom and at least one CO alarm in the home.

These devices are proven to be the best way to stop complete destruction or a loss of life due to a fire. While smoke detectors are a must-have, there are many simple things you can do around the house to reduce your risk of a house fire.

<h3the-kitchen-grill">Clean the Kitchen & Grill

Over 48% of all home fires on average are started while cooking food. There are many common appliances that are designed to produce heat, and some of them are without safety mechanisms. You likely have a toaster, oven, stove, microwave, grill and a coffee maker in your home, and all of these can put you at risk when improperly used.

Cleaning these items regularly and removing any pieces of food that could ignite is important to keep your home free of hazards. Additionally, you should never grill under a covered area like a roof or deck, these things can easily catch fire when heat builds up from below.

Dirty wall outlets are another common source of fire in the home. Check these regularly for a collection of dust or dirt that could cause sparks to fly. Also, remember to leave plenty of space between your devices and the wall to allow proper airflow.

<h3a-defensible-space-in-your-yard">Create a Defensible Space in Your Yard

Fires that begin outside can spread by over 14 miles per hour. When they come knocking at your door, a yard is the last thing standing between your home and destruction.

Recently, there have been innovative landscaping methods that protect your home from the spread of outdoor fires, and allow firemen to work with plenty of space while trying to work.

These techniques have been so useful in fact, that states like California are imposing defensible zone requirements for yards, so following suit might also be a smart idea for you.

However, following these techniques doesn’t prevent you from tending to the garden and planting new flowers in your beds—they focus on placing plants in specific locations to prevent the fire from expanding.

The fire will weaken with the flammable objects spread further apart, so you should take the time and clear out any dead plants or leaves that could become fuel during a fire.

<h3it-clean-keep-it-safe">Keep It Clean & Keep It Safe

Aside from cleaning your appliances regularly, and maintaining your yard, performing a thorough cleaning routine can help reduce your risk of house fires. Set aside time for you and your family to work through the long list of necessary tasks.

The seemingly endless sheet of cleaning jobs doesn’t have to be burdensome if you spread it out over the course of a week. Along with a deep-clean, simply dusting your home from time to time is a way to prevent fires.

These days, our homes have evolved into more than simply shelter. They allow us to work, play and relax every single day. Putting in the effort to keep yours clean is a relatively easy way to help prevent destruction from a fire.

If you have experienced fire damage or want to learn more about our fire damage restoration services, contact us today. We’re here to act fast, 247.

What Benefits Does Creating a Storm Safety Plan Provide? | SERVPRO® of Beaver County

5/20/2022 (Permalink)

A dark cloudy sky with lighting strikes off in the distance If you discover storm damage to your home or business, reach out to SERVPRO of Beaver County right away.

Thunderstorms are extremely common around the world, especially here at home. In fact, there are around 100,000 thunderstorms throughout the United States every year, which is more than 200 every single day.

These dangerous weather events can include strong winds, hail, flooding and lightning strikes that can all do serious damage to you and your home.

Here in Pennsylvania, Beaver County to be specific, we are particularly at risk of suffering from these disasters, facing cold fronts from the north and warm air movements from the south. Combined with the fact that rivers and creeks run through our entire area, flooding is extremely common around here due to storms.

It would be awesome to change the weather and prevent anything dangerous from coming close to us, but that’s a fantasy. Preparing for severe storms, on the other hand, is very possible, and can help you stay safer by reducing the impact storms have on you and your home.

From putting together an emergency kit to creating a communication strategy for your family, there are many ways to prepare that we’ll discuss here today.

<h3severe-weather-communication-strategy">Your Severe Weather Communication Strategy

Knowing what’s going to happen before it does isn’t impossible when it comes to storms. Staying informed by listening to your local officials who provide emergency alerts is the best way to know what’s coming.

On top of using your cellphone and television, acquiring an NOAA weather radio is a good idea in case you lose power or signal.

On top of being able to receive government alerts, developing a communication strategy for your family is important. Check in with every member of the family before the storm hits so you’re not worried about their safety when you should be focusing on yours.

Picking a safe room (like a basement, bathroom or closet) with no windows is crucial so you have a place to shelter when the eye of the storm is on you. Choose one of the bottom level of your house.

<h3severe-weather-emergency-kit">Your Severe Weather Emergency Kit

Aside from knowing what to do, knowing what to pack is also critical to outlasting the effects of extreme weather. Prepping an emergency kit that can sustain you and your family for at least 72 hours is imperative. Pack plenty of food, water and first-aid supplies because these often run out fastest.

To improve your kit beyond the basic necessities, adding flashlights, batteries, clothes and any prescription medication can prove useful.

<h3severe-weather-aftermath-checklist">Your Severe Weather Aftermath Checklist

Once the storms are gone, and it’s safe to exit your home, there are a few steps you should take to prepare yourself and debrief. Observing how your planning worked and didn’t work will help you improve upon it for the next disaster.

Then, once you and your family have been checked on, you should then inspect your property for damage.

With any luck, the storm came and went without damaging your home. However, in the event that your home is damaged, remember to call SERVPRO of Beaver County. Our expert team in green has more than 50 years of experience, and we always provide a quick response to any disaster.

If you discover storm damage to your home or business, you can count on SERVPRO to handle the restoration. We’re here 247 to spring into action—get in touch with us today.

The Rapid Progression of Water Damage in Your Home or Business | SERVPRO® of Beaver County

5/6/2022 (Permalink)

A bathroom sink showing signs of a water leak SERVPRO of Beaver County is your 24/7 water restoration expert. Call us right away if you need immediate service.

Minor problems like leaky faucets and small water spots are often looked over during routine maintenance, but you should never underestimate the damaging results that moisture can cause to your home. An average household leak can waste up to 10,000 gallons of water in a year.

Water damage may seem slow-moving but it progresses quickly, as moisture seeps into walls, floors, rugs and any other soft surface.

You must address the issues immediately in order to get the best restoration and to protect your home from further damage. We’ve created a condensed timeline of how water damage evolves:

<h2the-first-24-hours">In the First 24 Hours

If you live in a house in a high-risk area, there is a one in four chance of a flood damaging your home within a 30-year period. Knowing what to do next is essential.

Your actions in the first 24 to 48 hours after flooding and/or water damage are most important. There are many items that are common in the home that will immediately fall victim to the dangers of standing water.

Any soft furnishing, fabric or upholstery will soak through and hold water. Your wooden structures like cabinets, desks and studs will swell from the moisture and become damaged quickly.

Personal belongings such as documents, books and photographs are especially prone to warping beyond repair. Even worse, mold can grow during this timeframe, so taking the proper steps is essential.

SERVPRO’s expertise and “restore vs. replace” mentality can help you save money while preserving precious keepsakes that can’t be replaced. If any materials cannot be successfully restored, this will be communicated to you.

These materials are typically removed as soon as possible to expedite the drying of all restorable materials.

<h2the-first-week">Within the First Week

Once the water has been present for over 24 hours, water damage progresses further and quicker in your home. Mold growth blooms and can spread easier with excessive moisture. As this mold sets in, it can cause damage to the structure of your home.

Additionally, wood surfaces, drywall, furniture and any porous surface will become increasingly compromised. Moisture and oxygen present for this long will begin to corrode metal items and weaken their structural integrity.

<h2one-week">After One Week

You want to avoid letting moisture sit for an extended period at all costs because some effects may be catastrophic or irreversible. As time goes on, the costs and efforts to restore the structure will increase significantly, and the risks associated with structural damage are greater.

<h2SERVPRO-will-help">How SERVPRO Will Help

Our restoration process will begin with an initial call, preferably inside of the first 24 hours. We typically begin our service work by thoroughly extracting any standing water from inside the home.

This step helps prevent moisture from spreading further and reduces the overall drying time.

It’s very possible that all affected items like floors, carpets, furniture and personal belongings will need deep-cleaning, sanitizing and deodorization. Once we have removed the bulk of the water, we send in our specialists that utilize industry-leading equipment to remove the water that isn’t visible.

After these initial steps, your home may need construction work to get your property back to its preloss condition. This step could include minor repairs or rebuilding entire areas of your home.

At SERVPRO, we’re capable of simplifying the restoration process by taking care of the initial damage mitigation and rebuilding any affected areas. We will keep you in the loop during every step so that you’re back in your home or business as quickly as possible.

Regardless of the type of water damage sustained, SERVPRO has the tools and teams to help your home or business recover. Contact us 247 when you need a dependable team to help you recover.

The Basics About What Causes Flooding | SERVPRO® of Beaver County

4/8/2022 (Permalink)

A street completely submerged in water with a flood warning sign sitting in the roadway Regardless of the cause of the flooding, SERVPRO of Beaver County has the team to help you recover from any disastrous event.

There are many weather-related issues that can cause devastation, but what people don’t understand is that flooding is the most devastating. In fact, flooding is the most common natural disaster, and it causes more deaths each year in the United States than hurricanes and tornadoes.

Every U.S. state and territory have been impacted by floods, and they’re usually caused by the same factors. Read on to learn more.

3 Types of Natural Flooding

Flash floods are the most common type of flooding, which happens when rain falls so heavily that it can’t be soaked into the ground quick enough. The excess water runs off and can take out many things with it, from yard décor to vehicles.

River floods occur when the riverbanks overflow. This will cause the riverbank to break and flood the surrounding areas.

Coastal floods are similar to river floods, but occur along a coast. If a storm surge or cyclone comes through, it will cause the ocean water levels to rise. Just like the river floods, the banks can overflow and lead to flooding.

The 4 Most Common Causes of Natural Flooding

Heavy rainfall. As you know, storms can produce a lot of rainfall. They can also stall across a specific area for an extended period. All of which can easily cause flash flooding. Areas that are urban are at a higher risk of flooding because of the amount of asphalt versus the amount of soil.

Oceanic activity. Just like with coastal flooding, storm surges and hurricanes will lead to an extreme increase in water levels, spilling over into nearby areas.

Dams and levees failing. Most people remember the disastrous Hurricane Katrina that happened in 2005. Rather than the hurricane itself, the dams and levees failing is what caused mass devastation to so many areas. This occurred because the pressure overtook the dam’s ability to withhold the water.

Snowmelts and ice dams. Some areas deal with large amounts of snow that accumulates over the winter months. This can lead to a buildup of snow and ice that will at some point melt when the temperatures start to warm up. This can cause ice jams, which happen because rivers become blocked by the ice buildup.

Regardless of the cause of the flooding, SERVPRO has the tools and teams to help your home or business recover from its disastrous effects. Contact us anytime when flooding or water damage makes a mess in your life.

What to Know About Commercial Flood Insurance | SERVPRO® of Beaver County

1/19/2022 (Permalink)

Insurance documentation We can work with your insurance company to understand your water, flood, mold, and fire coverage

Making sure that your business is able to withstand any disaster is key to future-proofing your concept, but have you considered what would happen if a flood impacted your commercial property? The majority of commercial insurance policies do not include flood damage in their coverage—which means if you do not purchase a flood policy separately, you may be out of luck should the waters begin to rise around your business.

Even if you are not in an area prone to flooding, it is likely that a flood insurance policy would make a good investment for your business. Below, we will be taking a look at some key things to note about flood insurance so you can be sure that you are choosing the best coverage option for your situation.

### What Is Considered a Flood?

A flood is defined as a “temporary condition of partial or complete inundation of two or more acres...or two or more properties.” Floods can originate from overflowing bodies of water, rapid accumulation of surface waters (such as a flash flood scenario), mudflow or erosion that leads to water rising.

If these types of events cause damage to your commercial building and/or its contents, flood insurance would be the coverage you would need.

### What Does Flood Insurance Cover?

Generally, flood insurance will cover direct physical damage to your commercial building as well as the contents within. This includes the building’s foundation, electrical system, plumbing system, HVAC system and personal items that are contained within the building.

When you look into purchasing a flood insurance policy, be sure to check with your insurance provider about any specifics.

### What Does Flood Insurance Not Cover?

While flood insurance will cover many of the incidents mentioned above, there are some things it explicitly will not cover. This includes mold or mildew damage that could have been avoided, sewage or drain backups, properties, and belongings outside of your commercial building and commercial vehicles.

It is also important to note that most flood policies take 30 days to begin coverage, so do not wait until you need it to consider purchasing it.

*If your business has been impacted by a flood and you need water damage restoration, we are here for you 24/7. Contact us today to learn more about the services we offer.*

Do You Have a Well-Stocked Office Emergency Kit? | SERVPRO® of Beaver County

1/19/2022 (Permalink)

Office Emergency Kit Emergency kits can help you at the time of disaster and SERVPRO is here to help after.

An emergency scenario is one that no one ever wants to endure, especially within the workplace. Unfortunately, disasters operate on their own schedules and often occur at seemingly the most inopportune times.

If you own a business, it is important that you plan ahead for these types of emergencies so you can keep yourself and your staff safe if one occurs during the work day.

### Why Should I Pack an Office Emergency Kit?

Packing an office emergency kit is one of the best ways to keep everyone safe and comfortable in the event of an emergency scenario. By packing provisions for each person in your office, if emergency officials instruct you to remain in place during an emergency, you can all stay safe and comfortable until you can leave the premises.

By keeping a workplace emergency kit, you can have the peace of mind that comes with being well-prepared for anything that happens.

### What to Pack in an Office Emergency Kit

During an emergency, keeping everyone as safe and as comfortable as possible can go a long way. While you likely will not be in a scenario where you are stranded in the office for long, preparing for the worst is a wise decision for those “just in case” scenarios.

These items are the bare essentials to pack in your office emergency kit to do just that:

  • Enough water for each person for several days
  • Nonperishable foods and eating utensils
  • Flashlights and their corresponding batteries
  • An NOAA emergency weather radio

Additionally, if you have the space and the ability, keeping some more comfort items such as emergency blankets and entertainment such as cards can be a great way to keep everyone occupied and comfortable while you wait for help to arrive.

### Where to Store an Office Emergency Kit

It is important that you store your office emergency kit properly to preserve its contents and be certain it is ready when you need it. Airtight plastic bags work well for individual items, while totes with secure, snap-on lids are a great way to keep everything together.

Keeping your emergency kit in the kitchen or in a supply closet is a great way to keep it out of the way but still accessible should it be needed.

Creating a Smart Fire Evacuation Plan for Your Business | SERVPRO® of Beaver County

1/16/2022 (Permalink)

Fire escape route drawing Having a plan in case of a fire requires little investment but can save lives

While there are so many things that are important for a business owner to consider, in everything that you do, the safety of yourself and your staff is of the utmost importance in your daily operations. No one wants to consider the possibility that a workplace emergency might impact them, but they can happen with little warning.

That is why having a plan is one of the best things you can do in the event of an emergency such as a fire.

Thankfully, planning your business’ fire evacuation plan does not take much time or any money, and it is a great step to keep everyone safe in the event of the unthinkable. Read on for some key considerations that business owners should keep in mind.

### Tips for Creating Your Business’ Fire Evacuation Plan

**Consider the possible fire scenarios.** Fires can break out in a multitude of ways, but some areas are more prone to fires than others. Kitchens are the top culprits for workplace fires, whether they are office kitchens or commercial ones. Additionally, any areas with a lot of electronics, such as a bay of desks, can be a threat. Think through the places where a fire may break out so you can plan your evacuation routes accordingly.

**Identify your exits.** Every area of the office should have at least two exits so that people can safely get out regardless of where the fire originates. Identify what exits your staff has access to, and be sure they are clearly marked as emergency routes so everyone knows exactly where to go to get to safety. If your office does not have an adequate number of exits, it is wise to consult your local fire marshal to see about getting an emergency ladder or some other solution.

**Practice with your staff.** Most people have a hard time thinking rationally in an emergency scenario, and an office fire is no different. Practice your evacuation procedures with your staff option so they can memorize the protocols well. This can keep things much calmer if a fire were to break out, as everyone is confident in what they should do and should not feel the need to panic.

Understanding When and How to Use a Fire Extinguisher | SERVPRO® of Beaver County

1/16/2022 (Permalink)

Fire Extinguisher Knowing how to properly use a fire extinguisher can help to avoid a large fire. SERVPRO can help restore any smoke damage from fires that do occur.

If you are trying to increase the fire safety efforts in your household, purchasing fire extinguishers for any high-risk rooms is a great place to start. Fire extinguishers are an inexpensive way to take the right steps toward fire prevention, and by having them at the ready, you are reducing the chances that a small flame will turn into a major house fire.

While buying a fire extinguisher is a great first step, knowing when and how to use it is every bit as important. Using a fire extinguisher should only be done if it is safe to do so, and memorizing how to use it is key for being able to take the proper actions in the moment.

### When to Use a Fire Extinguisher

While you may think the answer is obviously, “in the event of a fire,” deciding when to use a fire extinguisher safely is actually a lot more nuanced. While putting out the fire is important, it is more important that you are keeping yourself and any others who may be present out of harm’s way.

Here are a few questions for deciding when to use a fire extinguisher:

  • Is the fire contained and only impacting a small area?
  • Have I alerted others that a fire has started?
  • Do I know how to properly use the fire extinguisher?
  • Is someone in the process of calling the fire department?
  • Do I have enough fresh air, or is there toxic smoke from the fire?
  • If I cannot extinguish the fire, do I have an escape route?

If you are able to answer “yes” to all of these questions, then it should be safe to proceed to using the fire extinguisher. However, if you are not, it is best to simply escape and call the fire department so they can handle the flames.

### How to Use a Fire Extinguisher

If you need to use a fire extinguisher, remember the P.A.S.S. method:

  • Pull the pin at the top.
  • Aim the extinguisher at the base of the fire, not at the flames.
  • Squeeze the handle to release the contents.
  • Sweep the extinguisher from side to side until all flames are gone.

Brush Up on Fire Safety for the Warmer Months | SERVPRO® of Beaver County

12/14/2021 (Permalink)

Flames and smoke from a bonfire Restoring fire and smoke damage is one of our specialties. Contact SERVPRO of Beaver County to learn more.

The warmer months will be here before you know it! This means longer days, new life and so many activities outdoors.

Warmer months offer us cookouts, bonfires, roasting marshmallows and so much more. But when doing these fun things, who focuses on safety?

Let’s look ahead and see what we can do in order to be proactive.

It’s proven that spring sees more daily fires on average than any other time of the year.

With safety being brought to the forefront, let’s focus on some of the most common fire risks and how you can prevent them.

Grilling

Barbecuing, cookouts…all fun, but also can be quite risky! With a combination of flame, heat, grease and gas, grilling can lead to danger easily. Before grilling, do a quick little inspection to make sure it’s in good working order with no leaks, placed at least three feet away from anything flammable and that it is cleaned in between uses. While cleaning in between uses seems like common sense, 20% of grill fires are caused by improper cleaning.

Fire Pits

Fire pits are where many people have the best discussions! You can become so enthralled with conversations that you might let safety slip your mind. Never leave kids unattended around a fire pit, and always keep a bucket of water close to the pit. Think ahead and don’t add leaves or pine needles to the fire. And when you’re ready to put it out, do it slowly to keep from scattering embers.

Chimneys & Dryer Vents

You’re much less likely to be using your fireplace during the summer, so now’s a good time to have it inspected and cleaned. A buildup of ashes can cause serious damage. Your dryer vents can also become clogged, so take the time to clean the pipes. As a bonus, taking care of these items now helps you become prepared for the winter months.

Your local SERVPRO technicians are on hand 247 for emergencies. If you encounter fire damage at your home or business, no matter the cause, we will be there faster and have it cleaned up sooner. Call or click today and experience the SERVPRO difference.

Fall Into Fire Safety | SERVPRO® of Beaver County

12/14/2021 (Permalink)

img src =”fire.jpg” alt = "a small campfire burning bright in the dark night ” > Be mindful about fall fire safety. Always remember that SERVPRO of Beaver County is the trusted leader in the restoration industry.

As you step outside in the mornings or evenings, you are probably starting to notice that crisp fall air making its way into full swing.

Fall can be a fantastic time to enjoy the great outdoors, but like any other season, fall does bring about some safety issues that we want to bring to your attention.

So tonight as you sit on your porch and enjoy the crisp breeze, take a look at these safety precautions you can use.

Campfire Safety

Campfires are a staple when it comes to fall weather. But do you know the safety precautions to take before really enjoying the campfire? Here’s a quick review.

As you prepare to build your campfire, the first step is to ensure that you build it somewhere away from anything flammable and away from low limbs of trees. Only use dry twigs or leaves to help get the fire started, and once it’s finally “caught,” you can add bigger sticks or limbs.

Never use an accelerant like kerosene or lighter fluid.; stick with a lighter or match instead, since accelerants can quickly make a fire spark beyond control.

When you are ready to put your fire out, slowly pour water on the fire. By pouring water on the embers, you reduce the risk of the fire reigniting.

Space Heaters

Portable space heaters are known to be one of the most common causes of home fires in the fall and winter. Anytime you use one of these, make sure you stay aware and never leave it unattended.

Most space heaters now have technology in place where if the heater gets tipped over or becomes too hot, the device will automatically shut off. But you still can’t be too safe when using these. Make sure you keep your heater up and away from anything flammable and from anyone who could accidentally knock it over.

Halloween

While Halloween seems far away, it can creep up on you in no time. You should know that candles, decorations and even costumes can be potential fire hazards.

So as you decorate and prepare to celebrate, stay aware and be attentive.

If a fire hazard should turn from potential to reality in your home, remember the trusted leader in the recovery industry and contact SERVPRO to get your property fully restored right down to the smell of smoke.

Take a Stand Against House Fires | SERVPRO® of Beaver County

12/14/2021 (Permalink)

img src =”firefighter.jpg” alt = "a firefighter battling a fire with a water hose in hand” > Regardless of the cause, SERVPRO of Beaver County are here for you if your home is affected by fire.

Seeing your home on fire is a frightening scenario to imagine. Fire is something that can happen out of nowhere and cause mass destruction in a matter of minutes.

And despite the amount of awareness that is brought to light about fire safety, more than a quarter of all reported fires occur in homes.

Let’s look at the top causes of house fires, and see if we can help get that number down by learning what we can do to help prevent them.

Cooking. Most house fires start in the kitchen, and the No. 1 culprit is unattended cooking. All you have to do to keep this from happening is to stay at the stove, oven or grill while you prepare food.

Heating equipment. House fires are more common during the winter, for good reason. Around 14% of house fires emanate from the heating unit. Many factors can contribute to this, including malfunctions, mishaps and flammables being too close. One common culprit? The space heater. If you use these handy heaters, place them away from anything flammable and on a level surface.

Electrical fires. There are lots of ways electrical fires can begin, but the most common is frayed wires or faulty outlets! It’s important to ensure you’re using electrical devices appropriately, and if you have an older house, have the electrical system inspected regularly. Older homes weren’t built with modern electrical usage in mind.

Intentional fires. There are more than 28,000 intentional home fires started every year. These aren’t fires that are set for other reasons and simply get out of control; these are fires that are set with the intention of destruction.

Smoking materials. Cigarettes and other smoking materials are responsible for only 5% of all house fires, but they are the cause of the most fire deaths. These deaths typically occur when someone falls asleep while smoking.

Regardless of the cause, SERVPRO is here for you if your home is affected by fire. Contact your local team today to see how we can help.

Statistically Speaking About Water Damage | SERVPRO® of Beaver County

img src =”sink.jpg” alt = "the underside of a sink showing water damage from leaking pipes ” > If water damage catches you off-guard and leaves you all wet, you’ve got help on your side. Contact SERVPRO of Beaver County.

Finding water damage in your home is one of the most gut-wrenching things that can happen. Seeing your home in disarray like that can make anyone want to cry.

As a homeowner, when it comes to water damage, the odds are not in your favor. The statistics listed below will help you see that it’s likely you will experience water damage at some time.

This is why you should always ensure that your appliances and pipes are well-equipped and maintained. While this may not prevent all the “what-ifs,” it definitely helps you have a fighting chance.

24. The number 24 is the percentage of all home insurance claims that are filed due to water damage. So almost one out of every four claims are because of water damage.

48. Water will eventually evaporate, but in the mean time, moisture can cause mold. When you have water in your home, the quicker you get it cleaned up, the better off you are. It only takes around 48 hours before mold will begin to grow in your home, and oftentimes it doesn’t even take that long.

98. While a basement can be handy, you should know that 98% of homes with a basement will experience water damage at some point.

10,234. Because water can quickly take over many things in your home, you can see how $10,234 is the average amount of insurance claims for water damage. Water can damage not only your possessions—it can also damage the structure and flooring of your home.

14,000. Water damage emergencies happen more often than you probably realize! Americans experience a water damage situation 14,000 times each day. So essentially that means that every six seconds someone is dealing with some type of water event.

13,000,000,000. Nine zeroes are what follows the number 13, as in $13 billion. That’s how much the United States distributes on an annual basis for water damage.

While these numbers can be a bit scary, the good news is that most water damage is preventable. If you make sure to take good care of your appliances and the “guts” of your home, you can defy the odds of becoming part of these numbers.

If water damage catches you off-guard and leaves you all wet, you’ve got help on your side. Contact SERVPRO to see how we can quickly and fully restore water damage to your home or business.

img src =”tire.jpg” alt = "a close-up image of a car and tire moving through snow ” > If winter weather should bring damage to your home or business, contact SERVPRO of Beaver County for fast, restorative solutions.

As the seasons change from the beautiful fall foliage to blankets of white all around us, we know that our lives are changing as well. We become focused on things like family gatherings, religious holidays, or even looking forward to celebrating the end of another year.

As we prepare ourselves for a busier time of year, we must remember safety can’t take a back seat. Here in Monaca, we are familiar with winter hazards like ice, snow and freezing temps.

So, let’s take a quick look of the important things you can do to help protect your home, family and pets from potential dangers.

Protect Your Family

Communicating is essential in an emergency. You can help your family prepare for a winter weather event by practicing an emergency action plan. By communicating this clearly and effectively, you can help your family remain calm if they have to ever use it.

Another way you can be prepared for winter weather is to make sure your vehicle is in good working condition. You should keep an emergency safety kit in your vehicle in case you ever need to take shelter in there. This kit should include things like batteries, flashlights, a blanket and a warm change of clothing.

Protect Your Home

Winter freezes can cause your home to have frozen pipes. This is one of the greatest threats that homeowners face during the winter months. If your pipes burst, it can cause damage to your home and everything in it.

Thankfully, nowadays we have heat sources that can help keep your family warm. Before you use your HVAC or other heat system for the first time in a given season, make sure you have inspected it and it’s in good working condition.

You may also choose to use a fireplace that burns real wood, which is great if you lose power. But have your fireplace inspected to ensure it is cleaned out and well-ventilated.

Protect Your Pets

Our pets are usually treated like family, and because we know that they can’t care for themselves, we need to ensure they are taken care of. Make sure your pets have a warm shelter to retreat to when weather conditions get bad.

And while not all animals can come indoors, you must take extra precautions with them. Ensure that they have plenty of food and thawed water.

Watch for Melts and Flooding

Snow and ice will eventually melt and can cause dangerous floods.. These floods can cause serious damage to your home and become costly.

Keep an eye on on the weather reports, and take precautions when flooding is possible.

If winter weather should bring damage or flooding to your home or business, contact SERVPRO for fast, restorative solutions.

“Defensible space” is a natural landscaped area that is maintained to reduce fire danger by creating a buffer.

Wildfires spread when they come across items that serve as fuel, such as downed tree branches and dead leaves. That is why it’s important to use responsible planting and pruning practices and to implement landscaping elements such as flame-resistant gravel.

Defensible space creates an invisible barrier of protection, designed to protect your home from wildfires. By creating this barrier, you help slow or stop the spread of fire as it draws nearer. This also gives firefighters their best chance of stopping a wildfire before it reaches your home.

Because defensible space is such an effective means of fire prevention, it’s recommended or even mandated in many cities, counties and states.

Wildfires Gone Wild

When you think about wildfires, the West Coast may come to mind. But in reality, wildfires can happy anywhere. There were over 59,000 wildfires across the United States in 2020.

And while California did account for 10,000+ of that number, the average number of wildfires per state in 2020 was right under 1,000. Here in Pennsylvania, we had 1,488 wildfires last year, burning 2,997 acres of land.

Because wildfires are becoming more common, it is essential that we do everything we can to help prevent them. Defensible space is one way that we can do our part.

If your home is damaged by fire of any sort, wild or not, SERVPRO is ready and able to repair the damage caused. Get in touch today to get the pros on your team.

Important Things to Note About Your Home’s Smoke Alarms | SERVPRO® of Beaver County

12/14/2021 (Permalink)

ServPro of Beaver County can mitigate any smoke damage! Smoke detector maintenance is crucial to home fire safety

Smoke detectors are an absolutely essential safety feature of any home or outbuilding—the
phrase, “smoke detectors save lives,” is one that certainly rings true. However, smoke detectors
are not something you can set up and forget until you need them.
Properly maintaining and testing your home’s smoke alarms is an important part of ensuring
they will work in the event of an emergency.
Fortunately, proper smoke detector maintenance does not take much time and can be easily
added to your seasonal home maintenance task list with ease. Just a few minutes every month
can provide you with priceless peace of mind and keep you and your family safer in the event of
a fire.
### How to Maintain Your Smoke Alarms
**Check them every single month.** In a quarter of household fires where smoke detectors
failed, dead batteries were to blame—which is a very preventable tragedy. Every 30 days, be
sure to use the test button on each smoke detector in your home to ensure that it is working as

it should, and if yours are equipped to notify you about a low battery, be sure you change them
out promptly.
**Replace them every 10 years.** Even if your smoke alarms seem to be working during your
monthly tests, they should still be replaced every 10 years according to the National Fire
Protection Association. Because their internal components can wear down with time, they can
become less effective at detecting smoke in the home and may not notify your family with
enough time to spare.
**Be sure you have plenty of them.** Do an assessment of how many smoke alarms you have
in your home and where they are located to see if you need more. You should have smoke
alarms inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, on every level of the home and in the
kitchen, garage and basement.
**Have a plan in case they sound.** If a smoke alarm sounds, it is vital that you and your family
know what to do. Making sure you have a proper evacuation plan in place is key to getting
everyone out quickly so you can stay safe and await the fire department’s response.

Household Fire Hazards You May Not Be Aware Of | SERVPRO® of Beaver County

12/14/2021 (Permalink)

Overloaded circuits can cause electrical fires Exercise extreme caution when using power strips. Ensure that your power strip includes surge protection.

While fire safety efforts are so important for any household, there is no way to protect against
things you do not know. While there are many obvious ways a fire can start in a home, there are
also incidents that have far less obvious causes—and because it is so vital to take action
quickly once a fire starts, prevention is a much better strategy for keeping your family safe.
The National Fire Protection Association estimates that house fires cause over $7 billion in
damages annually, but many house fires can be prevented with just a few simple precautions.
Below, we will be looking at some common causes of house fires that you may not be aware of
so you can always practice good household fire safety habits.
### Common Yet Surprising Causes of Household Fires
**Overloaded outlets and power strips.** While your average power strip may have six separate
plug-in ports, depending on what you are plugging in, that may be far too much for your
electrical system to handle. Plugging in multiple appliances and heating devices at once can
overcrowd the circuit and quickly lead to an electrical fire due to sparks.

**Dryer vents clogged with lint.** Dryer lint is a byproduct of drying clothes, but it is also an
extremely dangerous substance if it is allowed to build up. If your dryer vents become
overloaded with lint, the dryer can potentially heat the lint up to extremely high temperatures
when you run your next cycle, which can start a fire.
**Objects too close to heating appliances.** Space heaters are a vital source of targeted warmth
in the winter, but they can be dangerous to use if you are not careful. While many newer models
are equipped with tipping and overheating sensors, keeping flammable objects too close to the
heater can also cause a fire to start.
**Improperly stored flammable liquids.** Many household cleaning items, paints and other
liquids are actually quite flammable if conditions are right. For example, storing things like paint
thinner or gasoline in a hot garage in the direct sun can cause a fire to break out if the
combustible material gets too hot, so be sure to read storage labels for anything of this nature.

Where to Install Smoke Alarms in Your Home | SERVPRO® of Beaver County

12/14/2021 (Permalink)

Have a plan when placing smoke detectors Smoke detector placement can make all the difference in the event of a fire.

Having an adequate amount of smoke detectors is so important, but so is making sure that they
are placed in the right areas of the home. It is estimated that about 60% of all home fire deaths
occur due to inadequate or malfunctioned smoke alarms, but this is a tragedy that is entirely
preventable as long as you are sure to do your research.
When installing smoke alarms, it is vital to make sure they are placed in the proper areas of the
home to alert your family to a fire as soon as it begins. Because you only have about two
minutes to get out in the event of a house fire, this early alert can make all the difference in your
family’s safety.
### Where to Install Your Home’s Smoke Detectors
In some cases, there may be local building codes that differ in their smoke detector
recommendations. However, you can generally utilize the following guidance from the National
Fire Protection Association to make sure your household is covered.
Here are the places where you should be certain you are installing smoke detectors:

? Outside each sleeping area of the home and inside each individual bedroom
? On every level of the home (including the basement, if applicable)
? In the living room, dining room and any other main areas of the home
? Inside the kitchen and any other cooking areas
? Inside the garage or workshop space
### Tips for Installing Your Home’s Smoke Detectors
In addition to ensuring you are placing the smoke detectors in the right spot, it is also vital to be
certain you are placing them as effectively as possible with these helpful tips:
? Install smoke detectors at least 10 feet from cooking appliances.
? Do not place smoke detectors near windows, doors or vents that may interfere with their
detection.
? Never paint smoke alarms, as this could reduce their effectiveness.
? Install wall-mounted alarms no more than 12 inches from the ceiling.
? Place smoke alarms near stairways to upper levels if applicable.
? Interconnect all your smoke alarms if possible, so one sounding will set all the alarms in
the home off for extra safety.
? For peaked ceilings, install smoke alarms between four inches and three feet from the
apex of the peak.

What to Know About Flash Floods When Thunderstorms Are Present | SERVPRO® of Beaver County

12/14/2021 (Permalink)

Lightning strike in cloudy sky Flooding and standing water can be detrimental to your home's foundation. Drainage systems, like French drains, can help.

If your area is threatened by severe weather, you are likely concerned with lightning, hail and
high winds—and understandably so! However, it is also important to be aware of the dangers of
flash floods, including what they are and how to protect yourself against them.
Flash floods are the deadliest weather event in the United States, so it is extra important to be
on guard against them to keep your family safe.

### What Is a Flash Flood?
Like is indicated in the name, a flash flood happens extremely quickly. By definition, it has to
occur within six hours of heavy rainfall, though it often happens in under three hours.
Because flash floods come about so suddenly, there is generally little time for warning so that
people can get to safety, which is part of the reason why they are so incredibly dangerous.
Flash floods will often occur due to overwhelmed storm drains in urban areas, or rapidly rising
creeks and rivers in areas near the waterfront.

### How Will I Know If There Is a Flash Flood?
If your area is experiencing heavy rainfall, it is vital to stay tuned into local weather news outlets
to keep up with the rapidly changing conditions nearby. If a flash flood is a possibility, there will
either be a watch or a warning issued for the area that could potentially be impacted.

A Flash Flood Watch is issued if conditions are favorable for a flash flood, but one is not actively
occurring. If there is a Flash Flood Warning issued, flooding is imminent or actively occurring,
and you should seek higher ground immediately.

### Why Are Flash Floods Dangerous?
Flash floods are mostly dangerous because of how quickly they occur, but they are also
dangerous because people often do not realize what a threat they are. Walking or driving
through flood waters is a major hazard—a few inches of water that is moving quickly can knock
someone over and even carry away a car.
Flash floods are not something to be taken lightly, which is why it is a must to heed all watches
and warnings and seek higher ground should you be at risk.

Thunderstorm Safety Tips to Keep Your Household Protected | SERVPRO® of Beaver County

12/14/2021 (Permalink)

Lightning above homes Have a plan for shelter and safety in case of a storm.

Thunderstorms are a rather frequent weather occurrence, but they are still quite dangerous and
have the potential to do a good bit of damage. While many things with a thunderstorm can’t be
prevented, such as the harm caused by high winds or flooding, there are ways that you can
ensure that you and your family are able to stay as safe as possible while the storm rages on.
Between lightning, hail and flash flooding, thunderstorms can cause serious injuries in several
different ways. By understanding when and how to seek shelter and prepare your family for bad
weather, you can help everyone stay safe until the storm subsides.
### How to Stay Safe in a Thunderstorm
**Know the difference between watches and warnings.** Staying tuned into local weather
broadcasts is so important when severe weather is possible, and understanding exactly what
the watches and warnings mean can help you make the right decisions. A Severe Thunderstorm
Watch is issued if conditions are favorable for a severe storm to develop, which is an indicator
that you should have a plan in case the weather turns sour. When that is upgraded to a Severe

Thunderstorm Warning, that means a severe storm has been detected in the area and you
should immediately take shelter.
**Have a plan for seeking shelter.** The best thing to do if severe weather is a possibility is to
stay at home, indoors and wait for it to pass. However, if you are caught out of the home and a
thunderstorm is nearby, have a plan for taking shelter in your car, in a nearby business or in
another safe location until things pass by.
**Keep your home emergency kit stocked.** It is not uncommon for severe storms to knock out
the electricity, which can last anywhere from a few minutes to a few days. A well-stocked
emergency kit can keep you from having to fret over this—be sure to stock flashlights, batteries,
first-aid supplies, entertainment options, nonperishable food and plenty of water for your family
so everyone can stay comfortable while the power is off.

Signs You May Have Hidden Water Damage in the Home | SERVPRO® of Beaver County

12/14/2021 (Permalink)

Leaking water on walls Leaks behind the walls of your homes could be causing mold.

Water damage is a headache that no homeowner would like to deal with, and for good reason.
Water damage can quickly become complicated, costly and quite a burden to handle, and the
longer it has to fester, the worse it can get.
While handling water damage quickly is the obvious solution, if you do not realize that the water
damage is present, this can be easier said than done.

Hidden water damage can occur for a multitude of reasons, whether it be leaks from hidden
pipes in the walls to roof damage that goes unnoticed until your ceiling starts to turn. While
some things like this can simply not be predicted, there are ways that homeowners can learn to
spot water damage signs early on so they know what to be on the lookout for.

Read on for our top tips!

Signs to Watch for That May Indicate Household Water Damage

**A musty, stale smell.** Oftentimes, our noses are the first thing to tip us off to hidden water
damage in the home. A musty, stale smell that does not go away with cleaning is often the
quickest indicator that there is water damage lurking somewhere. Water damage attracts mold
and mildew like a magnet, and as they begin to grow, they can put off serious odors that can’t
be missed.

**Mold growing in odd places.** Speaking of mold, if you see it somewhere in your home, there
is a good chance it is pointing right to hidden water damage. Mold thrives in damp and humid
environments, so if it suddenly crops up on your walls, under your sink or around appliances
that use water, that is a good indication a leak is lurking somewhere nearby.

**Discoloration of the walls or ceiling.** Water leaks can often be hidden by drywall, which can
make it harder to spot them until they grow severe. However, if you pay close attention, you
may be able to notice discoloration, which could indicate that there is water damage at play.
When water soaks through drywall, it will often leave behind a discolored splotch when it is
given the chance to dry out completely.

What to Know About Choosing a Fire Extinguisher | SERVPRO® of Beaver County

10/10/2021 (Permalink)

When it comes to fire safety for your household, there are fewer things more cost-effective than getting a fire extinguisher for various rooms of the house. This small investment can be a lifesaver if a sudden fire were to break out, but it is important that you have the right tool for the job and are aware of how to use it for maximum effectiveness and safety within your home.

How to Choose a Fire Extinguisher

There are five types of fire extinguishers, and each type has a different formula that is designed to be used on certain types of fires. Making sure that you choose the right fire extinguisher for the right room is key, as the wrong fire extinguisher can make a mess without actually stopping the flames from growing. The five types of fire extinguishers are:

**Type A Fire Extinguisher**

This type of fire extinguisher is designed to be used with ordinary, organic materials such as cloth, wood and paper, and these are the most common fire extinguishers that households and businesses need.

**Type B Fire Extinguisher**

A Type B fire extinguisher is designed to be used with grease, gasoline, oil, paints and other liquids that are combustible and flammable. These are often helpful in garages and basements that store these types of products.

**Type C Fire Extinguisher**

A Type C fire extinguisher is especially designed for electronics. Appliances, tools or any other equipment that gets plugged in are prone to electrical fires, so a Type C fire extinguisher could be useful in an office area or near personal electronics.

**Type D Fire Extinguisher**

Some types of specialty metals are flammable, which is what a Type D fire extinguisher is designed to combat. These will often be found in factories and metalworking shops.

**Type K Fire Extinguisher**

Typically found in commercial kitchens, the Type K fire extinguisher is designed for use on vegetable oils, animal oils and fats that might build up and catch fire in cooking appliances.

**Multipurpose Fire Extinguishers**

Multipurpose fire extinguishers are a great solution for most households. Many of them will handle categories A, B and C, which is typically enough to meet the needs of any room in the average household.

*If you have fire damage, you can count on us for assistance. We are here 24/7 to handle any fire damage that may arise in your home or business. Contact us today to learn more.*

Understanding When and How to Use a Fire Extinguisher | SERVPRO® of Beaver County

10/10/2021 (Permalink)

How to Use a Fire Extinguisher

If you need to use a fire extinguisher, remember the P.A.S.S. method:

  • Pull the pin at the top.
  • Aim the extinguisher at the base of the fire, not at the flames.
  • Squeeze the handle to release the contents.
  • Sweep the extinguisher from side to side until all flames are gone.

What Does It Look Like If a Basement Has Water Damage? | SERVPRO® of Beaver County

5/20/2021 (Permalink)

a grey basement showing signs of water damage SERVPRO of Beaver County is a full restoration company. Our team of experts are on call and ready to help you determine the best course of action.

Basements are wonderful additions to any home, but especially for homes in colder climates. Not only is the extra storage and livable space in partially and fully finished basements great, but it can be a safe place to go in the event of serious storms.

While these spaces are great assets, they also come with their own challenges. It’s not a guarantee that it could happen, but many basements do have issues with water damage.

This is something that you will need to be aware of and vigilant about over the course of your home’s lifetime.

Below we will highlight some of the signs that mean that water damage is present in your basement—and if you feel it may be a good idea for someone to come inspect the area, our expert water restoration technicians will be here to help.

3 Signs You May Have Water Damage In Your Basement

Odors. If you’ve sensed musky, unpleasant odors in your basement, you may think this is simply how all basements smell. You wouldn’t be alone, as this is a very common misconception. However, this smell will only arise if there is moisture in the basement that has caused mold and mildew in the environment. If water has gotten into your basement and remained stagnant before evaporating, it will leave a pungent and unpleasant scent, so you’ll be able to identify this even if you can’t see it.

Paint flaking or peeling. Even with something as seemingly foolproof as waterproof paint, leaky basements will still cause issues for walls and masonry. This paint can give well-intentioned homeowners a false sense of security by masking any problems for a while, but then lead to a compounding issue later. Water that seeps in can eventually work its way through the paint, causing peeling, cracking or bubbling on its surface.

Cracks in the foundation. It is common for homes to settle over time, but seeing cracks in the foundation is not normal and can be a sign of water damage. These cracks are not limited to the floor, but can also show up in the ceiling or walls. Anything larger than a hairline crack could be a cause for concern that there is water putting pressure on your home that it cannot stand up to.

These signs are worth having us come take a look. Our technicians can help you determine what the root of these issues are and how we can create a solution. Contact us today!

What Makes a Thunderstorm Hazardous? | SERVPRO® of Beaver County

5/6/2021 (Permalink)

a large lighting strike just in front of person driving down road Thunderstorms can pop up at any moment. Contact SERVPRO of Beaver County if you experience any damage.

Sometimes it starts with a breeze that turns into stronger gusts, or maybe you first see the deep gray rain clouds. But then you hear the sky rumble and you instantly know: A thunderstorm is rolling in.

These common, but sometimes very dangerous storms, are known for their springtime arrival, but can last later into the year, often bringing with them hail, high winds, lighting and flooding.

As is adequately named, a thunderstorm is defined as any storm that has thunder (and lightning, by definition, comes with it as well). For it to be classified as a severe thunderstorm, it must have a minimum straight-line wind speed of 58 miles per hour and hail that is at least one inch in diameter.

Being prepared is the most important way to keep your family and property safe during turbulent weather, so we’ll look at some hazards that could make these storms most threatening.

The Most Dangerous Elements of a Thunderstorm

Lightning strikes. While most people consider lightning to be a scary phenomenon associated with a thunderstorm, many don’t know the full extent of the damage it can take on person and property. A recent report showed that lightning injures about 300 people every year. Furthermore, the damage that lightning, let alone high winds, can do to your property includes starting a house fire and being responsible for felling trees that could land on homes or vehicles. The most important thing to remember is that even if you may not see it yet, lightning will tag along in every thunderstorm, so the danger is a possibility even if it’s not made itself visible yet.

Damage from hail. Hail can sound quite scary falling against a roof or a window, and oftentimes it inflicts as much damage as it sounds like it might. It most commonly causes damage to uncovered cars, people and pets who don’t have adequate protection, and roofs and sidings of houses.

Flash flooding. If you’ve ever experienced how quickly flash floods can happen, you’ll know the danger that it can do in a short period of time, especially for drivers on flooded roadways. In an instant, a storm drain that is not properly draining or a small ditch can overflow and cause driving on these roads a life-threatening situation. Damage to vehicles is very possible, as is having a car carried away by the tide in severe circumstances.

Thunderstorms are part of the natural rhythm of weather disturbances, but severe storms can mean serious damage to person and property. If a storm has caused damage to your property, contact us 247 to see how our storm restoration processes can help.

While this can be a frightening statistic, the best thing homeowners can do is have a plan for what restoration company they will work with in the aftermath. The right company should be highly trained, extremely reputable and well-versed in all kinds of damage—which is exactly the value that we aim to provide.

Helping You Prevent Home Damage Due to Heavy Rains | SERVPRO® of Beaver County

5/6/2021 (Permalink)

bright blue rain splashing into a pool of water If you need help dealing with any damage caused by water, contact SERVPRO of Beaver County today.

You aren’t alone in dealing with water damage to your home. In fact, statistically, you won’t even be the only person you know who has to file a water damage claim.

How do we know this? We researched the issue and realized that experts have already done the math.

One in every 50 Americans will need water damage restoration this year. That translates into millions of homeowners. Depending on your social circle’s size, that can even mean more than one person you know will have to file a claim this year.

Understanding Water Damage Causes

If you made a list of ways water can damage your home, you would probably immediately think about natural disasters and flooding. And those can happen. But sometimes water damage happens because things break at home or pipes burst.

You might not consider the problems heavy rains can cause, but they can become a real issue. If your home is not properly maintained, these rains can cause costly damage.

You can use a little planning and creativity to ensure your home is well-maintained and ready to withstand water damage.

Don’t Let Rainwater Damage Your Home

Stay safe from rainwater damage by following some basic guidelines for better home maintenance.

Explore sealing your roof. Experts estimate that almost 95% of damage is caused by water finding its way through gaps in your shingles, which can be prevented with this step. It’s definitely worth considering.

Spend time and effort to be sure your yard is draining the right way. This is a straightforward way to make your yard safer from water damage. Water draining toward your home can compromise the landscaping. If you notice issues, talk with an expert about how to correct them. They can help you find ways to protect your yard.

Research native plants and how to use them as protection. It takes a little research, but learning about our area’s native plant varieties is helpful and can protect your yard. Talk with a local expert about native plants or visit a native plant sale. You can also look for information online.

If you need help dealing with damage caused by water, fire or any other issue, we’re here to help you restore your home. We have crews who are available 247 in the event of an emergency. Contact us at any time to learn more about us and how we can help you restore your home to its original state.

We know business owners can feel like they’re facing an uphill battle after a natural disaster like a fire, flood or severe storm strikes. But business owners in our area have a powerful partner in the local SERVPRO team. We’re always here to help you when you need advice and support.

Here are some of the best pieces of advice we can offer local business owners as they begin the restoration process.

Advice for Business Owners Going Through the Restoration Process

Your business has what it takes to thrive even after a natural disaster. But you need to know the best steps to take to help you move forward. Here’s what we recommend:

Your disaster plan is vital. It’s difficult for most business owners and their families to focus and think clearly after a disaster. That’s why it’s smart to plan for these situations before they happen. Before you need it, build a disaster plan and spend time reviewing and learning the steps. If you’re impacted by a disaster, read the steps you laid out again (or a few times) and follow them.

Document the damage you’ve suffered. Take plenty of pictures. You’ll want to do these before you start cleaning up the damage so your insurance company can get an accurate picture of what happened. Also, inventory lost or damaged items.

Reach out to your employees and offer any assistance you can. Your employees are a major part of your business, and they may need your help. You can look to resources like the Small Business Administration (SBA) for help.

Stay in touch with your stakeholders. Regular contact with your suppliers, your employees, your customers and your community. will put you in a better position when it’s time to open again.

If your business is damaged due to fire, water or any other cause, you can always count on us for restoration assistance. We have crews who are available 247 in the event of an emergency. Contact us at any time to learn more about our restoration services and how we can help you.

Your Guide to Protecting Your Home From Spring Storms | SERVPRO® of Beaver County

3/10/2021 (Permalink)

heavy rain coming down from dark clouds If you experience any property damage from spring storms, contact SERVPRO of Beaver County.

It’s time for spring, and if you’re like many local residents here in Beaver County, it can’t come soon enough.

Many people spend the days before the weather starts warming up trying to decide how they want to spend the Saturday and Sunday afternoons. DIY projects are a popular option.

If you’re planning to add DIY projects to your list, then you might want to consider doing a few that will help maintain your home and protect it against one of spring’s biggest weather threats—strong thunderstorms.

There’s nothing we can really do to stop storms from hitting. But we can take a lot of steps to ensure our homes are as prepared for them as they can be.

Preparing Your Home for Thunderstorms

Why not add these items to your to-do list for the upcoming warmer season?

Check your gutters for debris. Clean gutters are vital. They allow water to move the right way around your house. If your gutters are clogged, they can cause water damage. This is a great step to add to your seasonal home maintenance routine. It can protect your family home all year.

Check your home for other common storm damage hazards. Check for overhanging tree limbs, unsecured grills, and furniture or gazebos. Cut tree limbs that hang over your roof or garage and secure anything you can. While the tree limbs might seem harmless on a sunny day, if they blow off when it gets stormy and windy, they can damage your roof. Avoid this scenario completely by keeping your trees trimmed.

Ensure your roof is ready to withstand storms. You don’t want to discover there’s a problem with your roof after a heavy rainstorm. Instead, you’ll want to be sure your roof is in good shape if a storm starts hitting. Check for things like missing shingles and signs of leaks. Repair them.

If a fire, flood or any other cause damage to your home, you can always count on us for restoration assistance. We are available 247 in the event of an emergency. Contact us at any time to learn more about our restoration services and how we can help you.

Flaky Chipped Paint Drywall This chipped, bubbled paint was caused by water damage

Millions of American homeowners every year have to deal with the aftermath of water damage. These problems can range from damage caused by flash flooding and severe storms to problems caused by household plumbing or sewer accidents or appliance mishaps.

In some cases, the difference between seeking water damage restoration help early and waiting can be stark. Some families deal with more repair costs, time and damage because they don’t call a water damage restoration company at the first sign of a more serious issue.

Identifying Water Damage

The early signs that you’re dealing with water damage can be easy to miss. The issues below are some of the most common early signs that you need professional remediation help.

The hardwood floor in your house is warping. Wood damage doesn’t take as long as you might think to become noticeable. If your hardwood floor changes colors, buckles or warps, it’s a good idea to call for a professional evaluation.

You start to notice musty odors. Smell is one of the first signs homeowners notice when they’re dealing with mold and mildew. That means if you notice the odor and move quickly to get help, you’ll be able to avoid more serious remediation work.

Your windows and door frames are damaged. This damage not only means you’ll need remediation or repair work, but it also can lead to additional water damage inside your home. That’s why moving quickly to repair it is vital.

One of the smartest things you as a homeowner can do is reach out immediately when you see any of these signs. By starting the remediation process early, you can save your family time and money.

A Growing Problem

If you do have to deal with water damage, then you aren’t alone. These claims are consistently the most common ones homeowners file each year.

According to insurance industry statistics, the number of fire damage claims have been dropping over recent years, but the number of water claims continues to grow.

If you have water damage in your home due to a burst pipe or another cause, you can count on us for restoration assistance. We have teams who are available 247 in the event of an emergency. Contact us at any time to learn more about our restoration services.

Snow and Water Damage

12/23/2020 (Permalink)

homes covered by snow Be proactive with water damage this winter.

With our first snowfalls in the books in Beaver County it’s time to get prepared for winter.  Here are some common damages created by snow.

Roof Damage- Heavy snows can cause ice build up and tile damage to your roof.  Make sure heat is not escaping from your roof causing snow to melt and re harden into ice.  Keep an eye on any roof damage that can lead to leaks and saturation in your roof and attic causing mold growth.

Ground Saturation - Our winters have been very unpredictable in the past years.  With a constant mix of cold and hot weather, it’s always good to be prepared with the weather pattern shifts. Snow in itself may not be a danger, but melting snow can cause flooding and severe ground saturation that may leak into your foundation.  This may cause underlying conditions such as mold growth.

Frozen Pipes - While not technically snow related, the risk of frozen pipes is just as damaging to your home.  Make sure to keep the temperature in your home above 60 degrees.  If you leave your home for multiple days, keep water dripping through the faucets to be proactive.  It’s also best to shut off any water sources on the exterior of your home that aren’t insulated, like garage or outside faucets.

Having a fire in your home, big or small can still be an overwhelming experience.  At SERVPRO of Beaver County we take the worry out of restoration.  We have a dialed in process for all fire damages that make the transition seamless for you, your family, and your home.  It all starts upon contact.  Once you reach out to us, we will come out to your property to assess the damage, from there we secure the property with any tarps or board ups to stop any further damage from the outside elements.  Then we get to work on removing any water damage, smoke, or soot.  Finally, we work to clean and restore your property to its previous condition.  Read the steps in detail below!

Step 1: Emergency Contact

The restoration process begins when you call us. Our representative will ask questions regarding the fire damage event that will help us respond immediately with the appropriate equipment and resources.

Step 2: Inspection and Fire Damage Assessment

We carefully inspect and test adjoining rooms of your property to determine the extent of the fire, smoke, and soot damage. This step is crucial to developing a plan of action.

Step 3: Immediate Board-Up and Roof-Tarp Service

Fire damage can often compromise windows, walls, and roofs. To maintain security and to protect against further damage, we can board up missing windows and walls and place tarps on damaged roofs.

Step 4: Water Removal and Drying (if water damage is present)

The water removal process begins almost immediately and removes the majority of the water. We then use dehumidifiers and air movers to remove the remaining water and complete the drying process.

Step 5: Removal of Smoke and Soot from All Surfaces

We use specialized equipment and techniques to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls, and other surfaces.

Step 6: Cleaning and Sanitizing

We clean, sanitize, and disinfect all of the restorable items and structures that were damaged by the fire. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to restore your belongings to pre-fire condition. We’re also trained to remove odors using industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment.

Step 7: Restoration

Restoration is the final step—getting your home or business to its pre-fire condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business. Call us today for all of your fire restoration needs at 724-709-7235.

Droughts in Pennsylvania

8/12/2020 (Permalink)

dry soil Droughts can cause cracks in the soil and your foundation.

We normally associated storm damage to flooding, high winds, and hail.  What we forget, is that no storms can create issues for you and your property, too! On the other end of the scale if you don’t have rain or water for days, weeks, or months, then your community can go into a drought.   The main effects of drought are actually something you would never think of - flooding.   When a drought occurs all of the moisture dries up causing clay heavy soil to shrink.  This means the foundation that your home is build on begins to shift and crack from the changing movement.  In turn, your foundation is not able to withstand the force of the movement and may start to crack under pressure.  These cracks are silent and won’t effect you during the drought.  Only until the drought is over and your area begins to bring rain will you discover the cracks to your foundation.  From there water can entire your home causing the cracks to erode and make bigger openings.  From there you can have moisture entering your home causing mold and even worse full blown flood.

Severe Weather Types in Beaver County

8/5/2020 (Permalink)

Boot in mud Mud can cause more damage to your home than you think!

There are many different types of weather patterns in Pittsburgh and the Beaver county area.  In total, our area is not as easily affected by the major natural disasters around the world, but we do still need to be aware and prepared for severe weather.

What types are there in the Pittsburgh area?

Tornadoes - We are most at risk for tornadoes during the spring time when hot and cold air combine.  Always have an emergency action plan and go to a basement or a bathroom during a tornado warning.  If your home is damaged, leave the property immediately to risk being injured and call your local authorities. Hurricanes - While we don’t get hit with Class 5 hurricanes, we still receive the residual effects of high energy hurricanes from the coast.  Rain, hail, and high winds can wreck havoc on your home.  Make sure to stay up to date on the latest weather predictions and have an emergency action plan. Severe Lightening Storms- We have had our fair share of severe lightening storms in the Pittsburgh area.  Always have an emergency kit that includes a flashlight and matches and a first aid kit.  Also make note of any dead limbs or trees surrounding your home.  These could be possible targets for lightening strikes near your home and can cause fires and damage to your home if they fall. Flooding- Most flooding occurs from the above natural weather patterns.  If a flood occurs in your home make sure to turn off all electricity and stay away from the water.  Call our SERVPRO of Beaver County office immediately to start the mitigation process. Mud/ Landslides - Our easily manipulated soil and sediment paired with the hills of Beaver County can mean disaster during a heavy rainstorm with flooding.  Landslides can easily create a track of fast moving mud and debris into your home.   Call us for all of your restoration needs at 724-709-7235.

Hurricanes and What You Need To Know.

8/1/2020 (Permalink)

palm tree in high winds We may not have palm trees, but we do have hurricanes!

It’s hurricane season! It may be silly to think since we don’t live by the ocean, but hurricane’s can rear their ugly aftermath all up the East Coast and Pittsburgh and Beaver County can get right in the path of destruction.  While we will ultimately never truly be in the eye of the storm there are still ways to be prepared for the residual weather coming from a hurricane.

What to look for:

Most hurricanes will bring heavy winds and rain to our area, but we could even see impacts of hail and even snow!

How to prepare:

  • Make sure you are staying up to date on the local weather forecast and listen! If a Meterologist tells you to be prepared there are a few things you should do.
  • While we do not need to board up windows like many on the coast it is good to be mindful that hail and other debris that could possibly break or dent windows.  Have towels and items on hand that you can use to cover any holes or cracks created.
  • Be mindful of any items in and around your yard.  Try and put anything away that is not held down and at risk of blowing away or blowing into your home.  Be aware of any dead limbs or trees on your property as well.
  • Keep an emergency box filled with a flashlight, matches, first aid kit, and any other items that are important.
  • Lastly, make sure you know your emergency services number in case of severe weather damage to your home.  If your home does become damaged during a hurricane weather it’s due to flooding, hail, or wind damage - SERVPRO of Beaver County is your one stop shop for all of your home restoration needs.  Call us at 724-709-7235.

What do I do when my house floods?

6/18/2020 (Permalink)

  1. Find the source.  Water flooding and damage could be from your home or an act of nature.  If flooding is occurring due to a house problem, shut the main water line off.  Always note where the water line shut off valve is before there is an emergency - this could potentially save your home from more damage.
  2. No matter the source of the flooding, It’s very important to turn off the electricity in your home.  If you cannot locate the electric box or cannot reach the electric box due to water, call an electrician.
  3. Make sure everyone is accounted for and evacuate the premises.  Flooding water can bring various bacteria and fast moving objects.  It’s best to leave the property as is until you can get a professional to assess the situation.
  4. Call 911.  If you are a homeowner you will need to call your insurer.  If you are renting contact your property manager.
  5. Make sure to take accurate documentation of the damage inside and outside of your home.  It’s best to always have updated photos of your property at all times to refer to insurance.

What Next?

Once you have contacted your insurance agent or landlord leave the rest to us.

4/20/2020 (Permalink)

flooding at supermarket Be prepared during a flood warning.

When there are heavy rains in our area, we might hear the words “flood warning” or “flood watch.” For many of us, either phrase tells us that we need to be alert to flooding. But did you know that there’s a significant difference between a “warning” and a “watch?”

Flood Watch

A flood watch is an alert that indicates the conditions are right for flooding to happen. However, it does not mean that flooding will necessarily occur. When you see this alert, you should prepare for flooding since it is a strong possibility. Monitor the local news or other reliable sources for updates.

Flood Warning

A flood warning is announced when flooding is either impending or already occurring. When you get this alert, you should take immediate action and monitor official channels to get updates on the condition. If you’re unsure what to do during a flood, check out the resources at Ready.gov!

Monitor News or Radio Stations

Because weather can be unpredictable, always keep an eye on your local news or radio stations. Many of them will also have apps or websites that offer real-time updates. As long as you are familiar with the phrases they use, you’ll be able to act accordingly when they issue alerts. In fact, they just might save your life.

About Coronavirus The CDC is responding to an outbreak of a respiratory disease caused by a novel (new) coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) that was first detected in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China that has spread to 60 locations internationally (as of this publication), including cases in the United States. The virus known as "coronavirus disease 2019" (abbreviated “COVID-19')' is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person or through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.

Scope of Cleanup Protocol

SERVPRO professionals can perform a proactive cleanup that involves facility or structure cleaning and disinfection where the customer states that there is no active known threat of COVID-19 contamination or exposure. The customer will be required to acknowledge that cleaning and disinfecting will only apply to the current state of the structure and contents. The structure would not be protected from future COVID-19 contamination if an infected person was to enter and occupy the building.

Cleanup Scope of Work and Planning

The CDC encourages cleaning of high-touch surfaces such as counters, tabletops, doorknobs, light switches, bathroom fixtures, toilets, phones, keyboards, tablets, and tables at a minimum." These same surfaces are mentioned in the CDC's guidance for commercial spaces

as well, including:

  • Kitchen/Food Areas
  • Bathrooms
  • Schools/Classrooms
  • Offices
  • Retail Spaces
  • Water Fountains
  • Shelving and Racks
  • Sales Counters
  • Carpets and rugs
  • Stair Handrails
  • Elevator
  • Cars
  • Playground Equipment
  • Fitness Equipment

Cleanup and Disinfecting Procedures

Cleanup procedures generally include cleaning of porous and non-porous surfaces, disinfecting of non-porous surfaces, cleaning and disinfecting of equipment, tools, and/or supplies used for cleanup process, and disposal of waste.

The CDC recommends usage of a labeled hospital-grade disinfectant with claims against similar type organisms to COVID-19.

SERVPROXIDE, SERVPRO's proprietary disinfectant, is a hospital-grade disinfectant that has demonstrated effectiveness against viruses similar to SARS-CoV-2 on hard, non-porous surfaces. In addition, SERVPROXIDE currently has dozens of EPA-approved claims including Feline coronavirus, Canine coronavirus, Staphylococcus (MRSA), E. coli, Salmonella, Rotavirus, Swine flu (H1N1) and more.

Porous surfaces that are not water-sensitive, such as carpet and other fabric material, cannot be disinfected but can be sanitized using SERVPROXIDE.

The details on Soot and Smoke

12/18/2019 (Permalink)

smoke fire on black background Call us to clear the air on soot and smoke damage.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing extensive hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:
•Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
•Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
•The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

Smoke is broken down into two areas, which are smoke wet and dry. Because of this, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before the restoration process, SERVPRO of West Beaver County will test the soot and determine which type of smoke damage has occurred. Our plan of action is based on the information we obtain during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
•Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
•Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
•Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Pinhole Leaks: The Silent Killer

9/23/2019 (Permalink)

Old corroded piping on a wall Check piping annually for pinhole leaks.

What are pinhole leaks?

Water damage can come in many different shapes and sizes.  When we think of water damage we normally think of exploding pipes and massive ceiling damage.  However, a common cause of water damage is a leak you can’t really see at all: the pinhole leak.  Pinhole leaks are small holes created by corrosion in your pipes, particularly copper pipes.  The problem with pinhole leaks is that you don’t know the extent of the water damage sometimes until it is too late.

A small drop of water that is leaking for months can wreak havoc on insulation and other wall materials.  Untreated liquid inside walls is a breeding ground for mold and mildew which can lead to serious health issues.

It’s best to use preventative measures to check your piping annually, but we know pinhole leaks are hard to spot and don’t typically get found until the damage is done.  We have the best in drying and water restoration equipment.  Let us know how we can help your property.

Fireplace Tips and Tricks

9/18/2019 (Permalink)

Make sure your fireplace is safe.

Knowing the ins and outs of your fireplace can help in a quick pinch.  Here are some tips to keep your fireplace safe for you and your property.

  1. Making sure your chimney is cleaned before the season will help greatly.  Soot residue can start hidden fires that can fester in your chimney.
  2. Using a fireplace screen will help prevent burnt logs from rolling out of your fireplace that can quickly start fires and burn carpet.
  3. Don’t use any other wood except for wood specifically for fires.  Using painted wood or treated lumber can let in toxic fumes that can be harmful to you and your family.
  4. It’s best to have a class c extinguisher on hand in case of any fire emergencies.

No matter the fire, we are here for you.  Please refer to our Fire Damage Tips - Until Help Arrives Guide and follow these tips to protect yourself and your property.

Hail Damage and Your Property

9/10/2019 (Permalink)

Hail can cause considerable damage to your home or business.

What is hail?

Merriam Webster Dictionary defines hail as: precipitation in the form of small balls or lumps usually consisting of concentric layers of clear ice and compact snow.

Thunderstorms with high updrafts bring rain drops into freezing temps causing them to form into ice balls I.e. hail.

Hail Damage can come in many different forms and lead to several different scenarios.  After the storm (provided the area is safe) you should do a property inspection to see if your home has been affected.

What to look for:

The obvious sign of hail damage will be actual dents or holes in your property.

If you notice your roof starting to leak or discoloration in your ceiling your roof could have been damaged, and worse is letting in water that can lead to major water damage.

Look at your surroundings.  Have you noticed shingles on the ground or other debris in your yard?

What to do if hail damage has been spotted:

At SERVPRO we offer roof tarping that be an efficient and quick way to make sure your home does not acquire more damage until your roof is permanently fixed.

If you notice possible water damage we can assess the situation and let you know the exact steps you need to take next.

Pollutants in the Workplace: Air Quality

9/2/2019 (Permalink)

Your employees health is a high priority.

There are many different factors that can improve quality of life in a work place.  A clean work environment, a great manager, or even casual Fridays can make great employees work even harder, but there are silent factors that you might not even know exist that can be harming your employees work capacity.

Air Quality greatly influences the performance as well as the health of your employees. So, what is indoor air quality (IAQ)?  OSHA defines IAQ by how inside air can affect a person's health, comfort, and ability to work.  It can include temperature, humidity, lack of outside air (poor ventilation), mold from water damage, or exposure to other chemicals.

If your building is hot or stuffy or has a musty smell, your air quality might be lowering productivity and the health of your employees.  You should get your walls and air levels checked immediately if you think this is occurring.

If there is mold present in your building SERVPRO can help!  We are highly trained in making sure the quality of your building will maintain your employee’s health and safety.

Lightning Fires and what you need to know

8/26/2019 (Permalink)

A dark stormy sky filled with lightning Lightning damage is no joke. Learn how to stay prepared.

Keeping safe during a storm and preventative measures.

The first thing you do if you’re preparing for a lightning storm is to unplug or turn off appliances like computers or TVs.  It’s best to stay off electronic equipment that is plugged in during a storm and to avoid showering or using running water.  Make sure to stay inside during these storms.

What is Lightning and how can it enter my home?

A lightning strike is an electrical charge in the atmosphere and can supply hundreds of millions of volts shocking into your home.  Lightening can cause roof and electrical damage, but can even cause fires in your home.  Lightning can enter your home through several different places.

  1. Roof
  2. TV antenna
  3. Chimney
  4. Telephone or power line
  5. Nearby tree
  6. Garage door
  7. Cable lines
  8. Irrigation system
  9. Gas piping

How to spot lightning fire damage?

When it is determined safe to exit your home make sure to inspect your property for any damage.  A lot of times lightning fires actually start in enclosed spaces like the attic or basement first making it harder for smoke alarms to detect a fire until it is too late.  Look for things such as missing shingles or chimney damage if you believe your house was hit by lightning.

If you suspect damage has occurred to your home call the fire department immediately as there could be a slow burn in your home.  If your home has been affected by fire, we can make sure to restore your home to its previous condition.  Call SERVPRO of West Beaver County for all of your property restoration needs.

They sanitized my basement and ran dehumidifiers until the levels were low enough to prevent mold. I would definitely work with them again if the need ever arose. They came everyday to check the equipment and I never felt like I was dealing with this problem by myself. Thank you again Jeff, Jake, and Brian. You were wonderful.”

Summer Grill Safety

8/13/2019 (Permalink)

Grills are a fun way to spend your summer time, but making sure you are safe is critical.

It may seem like the dog days are dwindling, but summer isn’t over yet.  That means pool parties, vacation, and grilling on the deck, but are you making sure you are using your grill in the safest way possible?  We have some great tips for keeping your home and family safe during grilling season.

  1. Make sure to not leave your grill unattended when it is lit.
  2. Clean your grill after every use.  Old grease and residue can be a quick way to start an unwanted fire.
  3. 3 feet rule.  Keep your grill 3 feet away from your property or other objects that can be on your deck or patio (chairs, tables, etc.)   Make sure you look for overhead tree branches that can catch fire.
  4. If you’re using a charcoal grill, dispose of coals in a metal can once they have cooled.
  5. If using a gas grill, open the grill before you light it.  If the flame goes out, turn your grill off and wait 5 minutes before you relight.
  6. Have baking soda or a class c fire extinguisher on hand in case of a fire that gets out of hand.

No matter the fire, we are here for you.  Please refer to our Fire Damage Tips - Until Help Arrives Guide and follow these tips to protect yourself and your property.

Top 5 Causes of Water Leaks

8/7/2019 (Permalink)

Keep an eye on all of your appliances for water damage and leaks.

Heavy rain and flooding aren’t the only way your home can receive major water damage. Here are the 5 common household water leak areas.

Corroded Pipes

These unfortunately can be the silent killer as you may not see this damage until it’s too late.  Certain piping like Polybutylene can corrode from chlorinated water and cause leaks inside your walls.

Bathtub and Shower

Make sure your tub is sealed properly.  If not, mold can start to grow in your bathroom and in your ceilings and drywall.

Excess water pressure

Having extreme water pressure can really put a strain on piping and fixings.

Tree roots

Keep an eye out for tree roots.  Ceramic piping as a lot of benefits, but can be fragile to

Hot water heater

You really need to pay attention to this major source of water.  If a metal tank is on its last leg this could leak gallons of water into your home.

Keep an eye out on all piping, fixtures, and appliances.  Remember, when you spot a sign of leaks call us immediately.  We will make sure to get your water damage taken care of.

Those pesky toilets!

8/4/2019 (Permalink)

Don't use too much TP or you could be in big trouble.

Picture this: you’re sitting down for a meal at your dining room table while your child excuses himself to go to the bathroom.  He runs upstairs to the bathroom.  Dinner continues as normal until you hear a flush.  All of a sudden water is trickling out of the ceiling onto your food and table – then it rushes and bubbles your ceiling.  Oh no!  It seems your little one has clogged the toilet from upstairs and it has run down through the vents onto your finely prepared meal.

This scenario may seem like a case of fiction, but is actually all too common in a household.

So, what should you do if your toilet starts to overflow?

Before doing anything you will need to assess what type of water has overflown from the toilet.  There are three types of water classifications.

Category 1 is clean water, which comes from a supply line and contains no contaminants.

Category 2 is grey water, which comes from a source that may include some contaminants.

Category 3 is black water, which contains significant levels of contaminants.

Next you should turn off the water and find the source of the over flow. Most likely it is just a simple clog that has caused a more than simple mess.

Our staff is trained in working with all levels of water and clean up.  We work to sanitize the area with special formulas that keep you and your family safe.  Our high tech drying equipment will work on the floor, ceiling, and drywall to prevent any further damage in your home.

Electrical Fires - What you need to know

7/24/2019 (Permalink)

Electrical Fires can be extremely damaging

Fireplaces and furnaces aren’t the only things that you need to worry about for fire disasters.  While those are more common in the winter, electrical fires can happen during any season at any time.

What can cause an electrical fire?

Any electrical appliance.  Lighting, Extension Cords, Outlets, Appliances, and Heat generating equipment are all at risk of electrical fires.

Preventative Measures that can help

Keep an eye out for product recalls on appliances and electrical wiring.  A simple search on recalls.gov will give you a quick answer.

Product recalls happen, but so do counterfeit products.  Counterfeit products land on store shelves more than you think and they are made cheaply and have a higher risk of malfunctioning.  You can refer to the Consumer Product Safety Commission for a list of items.

DO NOT plug appliances into extension cords.  Plug appliances straight into the wall for appropriate operation.

Any appliance that generates heat will use more electricity.  Try not to plug heat related items into one circuit.  This includes hair dryers, space heaters, etc.

If you home was built before 1990, you will want to check and make sure your wiring is not old and out of date.  With such an advancement of technology, some homes aren’t equipped for the amount of high technology electricity that we use on a daily basis.

What to do

DO NOT try and use water to eliminate the electrical fire.  This will out you at risk for electrocution.  Having a fire extinguisher on hand is the best way to counter and electrical fire.

To reduce the most risk, it is best to turn of the electric (if possible and safe), leave the home, and call 911.

Prepping for winter storms in the summer

7/23/2019 (Permalink)

Prepping now can give you less stress later

It’s hard to even think about winter right now in the middle of summer, but we aren’t that far away from the blistering cold and heavy precipitation.  We can’t ever predict when winter storms will start and how bad they will be, but there are plenty of preventative measures that you can work on now with your home or business while the temps are still hot.

Check your chimney

Have a chimney cleaning service come and clean out your fireplaces.  Soot and other debris can cause your chimney to get clogged and start a slow burn within the chimney.  This can lead to a major chimney fire.

Check your furnace

Similar to having your chimney serviced, you will want to make sure your furnace is cleaned of any debris and in working condition.  Furnace puffbacks are one of the leading causes of smoke damage and fires in the winter.

Alternative Fuel Sources

If you have a wood furnace now is the time to start chopping wood for the winter.  You can never have enough wood.  Our winter temps can get well below freezing and having a safe buffer of wood will always help.

Start working on a snow emergency kit (this will also help during large summer thunderstorms)

Keep a stash of hand warmers and body warmers that are air activated.  Start purchasing lanterns and flashlights.  A lot of stores have them on sale during the summer months for camping.

It’s never too early to prep for winter.  Read about our storm procedures here.

Roof Tarping = Good Quick Fix

7/18/2019 (Permalink)

Roof Tarping is a quick way to prevent further damage to your home or property.

Heavy wind and storms can easily blow roof tiles off, leaving your roof and ceiling at risk for water leaks. This can especially occur during the hurricane season or those strong Pennsylvania winters.

When this happens, you roof is immediately susceptible to more damage especially if the storm and high winds are continuing.  Roof tarping can be used in these instances.

Why should I consider roof tarping?

Roof tarping is a quick and efficient way to patch up your roof.  While not permanent, roof tarping works so that your roof does not suffer further damage from the storm.  This allows you time to work on fixing your roof permanently to prevent future water leaks in your home or business.

What can happen if I do not use roof tarping in between fixing my roof?

What may seem like a small problem of missing shingles can quickly turn into a disaster.  Leaving your home or business exposed to the elements can cause water damage leading to mold or worse, structural damage.   Roof tarping may also be required by an insurance agency if you have filed a claim.

Our SERVPRO team is versed in doing all types of home remediation.  Our highly trained technicians take the appropriate precautions when operating any job so that you can remain stress free.  If you need home repairs, call SERVPRO of West Beaver County today!

Property Management: Tips on owning a second property

6/3/2019 (Permalink)

Simple tips and tricks can help you keep your second property in top shape!

Investing in multiple properties for long term leases or short term rentals is a great way to pull in some extra income.  Unfortunately, rowdy tenants can create more than superficial issues.  Here are tips to keep your rental home top notch.

Family Groups Only

If you work in short term rentals, thoroughly vetting who you rent your property to can make a load of difference.  Renting only to family groups can help prevent unnecessary home damage.

Instructions for Chimney Use

Operating a fire place can be fairly simply, but every fireplace is different.  Leave clear instructions for you guests on how to operate your individual fireplace.  Make sure to get your chimney cleaned annually, at least.  Rented homes get used and they get used a lot. The amount of soot that your fireplace can accrue on your rented home can be double or triple what you would use in your private home. The last thing you want is a fire brewing in your chimney.

Winterizing your property appropriately

If you have invested in a summer home that’s in an area with cold winters, you will need to winterize your home.  If you don’t winterize your home you are at risk for major water damage from burst frozen pipes.  Even worse, since the home is not occupied for a long period of time that water damage could turn into other issues such as intense mold breeding.  Make sure to drain your pipes and set your home at an appropriate temperature (50-55 degrees).

Unfortunately, we know you can’t predict what every guest will do.  That’s why we are here. From cleaning up from dirty guests to remediating major water damage.  We will make your rental property “Like it never even happened.”

AH-CHOO! Pollen season is here

5/29/2019 (Permalink)

Does this photo make you want to sneeze just looking at it? If so, you may have pollen allergies!

Watery eyes, runny nose, and itchy throat can only mean one thing.  Pollen season has arrived!

If allergies got you down, you’re not the only one. Over half of the population claims to have allergy symptoms from mild to severe.  Whether it is mold or ragweed, these allergies can really put a damper on when you are trying to enjoy the warm climate.

How can you prevent pollen and other allergens from entering your home?

  • Take a shower after you have been outside or at work all day.  Pollen can easily stick to your clothes.
  • Clean bed sheets once a week and keep dirty clothes piles to a minimum.
  • We love our pets, but they are pollen magnet!  Running around in the grass outside can really make your pet a carrier for those pesky allergens.  Wipe your pet off with a wet towel before letting them into the house.  If pollen is really getting to you, wash your pet on a minimum of once a week.
  • Try and eliminate the source – keep windows closed and don’t go outside unless you have to.
  • Make sure your air ducts are clean before turning on the a/c.  The air conditioner can just shoot dust and allergens right back into your home.
  • Vacuum carpets and wipe off furniture whenever possible.

These tips can really help diminish allergens within your home, but sometimes it’s just not enough.  Work with us on cleaning out your air ducts or giving a grade A cleaning in your home for the spring and summer season.

What is hoarding and why is it a problem?

5/27/2019 (Permalink)

Hoarding can create debilitating property damage.

You’ve seen it on TV, but the truth around this disorder is that it is a harsh reality for a lot of affected individuals.  Hoarding spawns from Obsessive Compulsive and Anxiety disorders, creating a debilitating act of having to hold onto or keep items most people would see as trash.  These items could include newspapers, old food containers, old clothing, photographs, food or even animals.

Most often, this can lead to dangerous and harmful living situations for the hoarder and anyone who may come in contact with their residence.  These items can create piles and piles of debris that can make it often impossible to walk freely within the home, making the homeowner at risk for injuries.  Old food and containers can cause an increase in unsafe pathogens and toxins that can affect quality of life.  The piles of items can also make a breeding ground for unwanted pests.

Unfortunately, most situations do not get resolved during the individuals’ lifetime and relatives or landlords can inherit the problems that their family members or tenants have left.  Our trained technicians can work with you on cleaning up what can feel like a lifetime of debris and restore the home to its original condition.

For more information on hoarding or getting help for yourself or a family member, visit the Anxiety and Depression Association of America website.

Fire Safety and Prevention in the Kitchen

5/16/2019 (Permalink)

Make sure to keep towels and other items away from an open flame!

Some say the kitchen is the heart of the home, but it can also be the start of many home fire disasters.  Here are some basic how-to's on how to prevent small kitchen fires from turning into major disasters.

Stopping Before it Starts:

  • Keep hand towels/ pot holders, shopping bags, aprons, or other flammable objects away from the stovetop.  It’s also good to not wear loose clothing or long sleeves and to tie long hair back.
  • Never leave the kitchen while cooking.  Water and other items boil down faster than you think!
  • Make sure to check old electric grills or other electric appliances for exposed wires.  You are just as much at risk for electrical fires in the kitchen as you are from an open flame.

I have a fire! What now?

Small items around your kitchen can help put out small fires before a disaster occurs.

  • If grease and oil catch fire on your stove DO NOT use water to extinguish.  Water only increases the spread of grease fires.  Use baking soda to spread on the small fire until it has been put out.
  • DO NOT use a towel to try and dissipate the flame.  Oxygen and air will only fuel the fire.  Instead, use a pot lid over the flame for a make shift snuffer.
  • Use a class-c fire extinguisher over the affected area.

These small efforts in the kitchen can help prevent a fire disaster in your home. If you believe a fire is out of your hands, never take a risk and always call the appropriate authorities.

SERVPRO of West Beaver County will be there when disaster strikes.  Take a look at some of our before and after’s that we have done on fire damage.

April Showers: Preparing for a Wet Spring

4/18/2019 (Permalink)

Heavy spring rainfall can bring more than just flowers!

The days are getting longer and the birds are chirping louder!  That can only mean one thing - spring is here.  The spring arrival can bring more than flowers and fun - the newly warm weather and intense rain can create the perfect breeding ground for unwanted mold.

Mold Causes and Factors:

Mold spores can enter your home through windows, doors, or even you.

Mold thrives on moisture.  Flooding, high indoor humidity levels (above 45 percent), leaky roofs, improper building maintenance, and indoor plumbing issues are all elements that can create the onset of mold growth. And remember, you don’t need significant water damage for mold to grow in your home.

A/C and Heating units can push spores around other areas of the property.

Certain building materials provide food for the mold such as, drywall, plywood, and carpet padding.

Remember, you don’t need significant water damage for mold to grow in your home.  All you need is moisture, heat, and dispersion for mold to become an issue.

Mold Signs:

Strong musty odor

Physically signs of mold can vary with in different colors (gray, green, white, or black)

Mold can lead to symptoms of runny nose, itchy eyes, or headaches.

What do to if you think you have mold:

Stay out of affected areas.

Turn off the HVAC system and fans.

Touching or distrubing mold areas can cause spreading.

Contact SERVPRO of West Beaver County for mold remediation services.

Summer Vacations: Preparing Your Home While You're Away

4/18/2019 (Permalink)

Rest easy knowing your home is safe!

Have you planned your summer vacation yet?  Whether it’s a long weekend or an extended stay, we’ve put together some tips and tricks for keeping your home safe and sound during your much-needed R & R.

Unplugging Electronics

Appliances can short circuit during a storm and cause an electrical fire and major damage.  Make sure to go through and unplug electronics such as, routers, televisions, and computers.  It helps save on energy bill, too!

Close Windows and Doors

Making sure all windows and doors are closed and locked.  This can cause double damage!  Unlocked doors and windows are an open invitation to thieves that can cause unwanted damage to your property.  Open windows can also let in humidity and heat, causing condensation that can lead to mold.

Turn off your water

Turning off your main water supply can prevent water damage.  Slow leaks can turn into major flooding.  There is nothing worse than coming home to a water damaged home!

Adjust the Thermostat

If adjusting the thermostat (another great way to save energy costs!), make sure to not completely turn of the A/C.  The air conditioning regulates temperature and moisture – the two main culprits for mold. The standard recommendation is around mid to high 70’s or a few degrees higher than your normal temp.

Clean Up Food

Don’t leave any perishables/ food out – this can attract some unwanted house guests! Cleaning out the refrigerator can also alleviate walking back to a smelly house.

Have an extra set of eyes

Have a trusted friend or family member check on your property while you are away.  If something unfortunate does happen, it can be spotted and rectified before any further damage can occur.

Lastly, we know that even the most prepared homeowner can have a disaster strike at any moment.  Know that SERVPRO of West Beaver County is here for you and your home.

Now go and enjoy that well-deserved vacation!

Water Damage Prevention

1/22/2019 (Permalink)

You can’t always prevent harm from coming your way. Sometimes disaster strikes and accidents happen. Some things, however, you can control. Giving these potential problem areas in your house some extra attention will help keep you and your home safe and dry!

  1. Your Windows! Regardless of the season, a drafty window can end up costing you a fortune! To check for drafts in your home, use a lit candle against windows. If the flame flickers as you run it along the seams then you may need to reseal your windows
  2. Your Plants!  Plants both in and around your home can be a problem if they are not properly maintained. In an effort to avoid the growth of mold or mildew on your property simply make sure that your garden areas have adequate drainage and that you are trimming plants around the structure.
  3. Your Gutters! As tedious as it may be, keeping your gutters clean is really going to help keep your home safe from costly water or mold damages. Cleaning out and inspecting your gutters regularly as well as keeping downspouts clear of any blockages will help keep the structure draining properly.

If you do find yourself dealing with the troubles of water damage in your home, give SERVPRO of West Beaver County a call at 724-709-7235. We’re available 24 hours a day to clean up the damage and restore your property.

5 Tips to Help Prevent a Fire in Your Home

1/21/2019 (Permalink)

Dealing with the aftermath of a fire in your home or business can be costly, time-consuming and emotional. Therefore it’s important to take certain precautions to prevent or decrease the likelihood of a fire. These helpful tips provided by the NPFA can reduce the probability of a fire in your home or office;

  1. Watch your cooking! You should always stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling or broiling food. Remember to never let young children near the stove or oven while you are cooking.
  2. Give space heaters space! It’s best to keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn.
  3. Keep matches and lighters out of reach! The safest place to keep matches and lighters is in high cabinets, preferably under a child lock.
  4. Inspect electrical cords! You should replace cords that are cracked, damaged, have broken plugs, or loose connections.
  5. Be careful when using candles! Be sure to keep candles at least one foot away from anything that will burn.

Not all fires are caused by things we have control over. Some fires can be caused by unavoidable acts of nature or unpredictable accidents. Just in case one of these catastrophes may happen, keep in mind that a fire escape plan for your family or crew is always a good idea! Try practicing it at least twice a year. In the event of fire damages SERVPRO of West Beaver is available around the clock to offer exceptional response time and trained professionals ready to restore your property!

Broken pipes

Again, you might think that a broken pipe could not happen to you, but that is the furthest thing from the truth. Duct Cleaning

11/16/2017 (Permalink)

WINTER is here and in a typical six-room home, up to 40 pounds of dust is created annually through everyday living!  Once the furnace kicks on, the dust and debris is pushed into the rooms which can cause multiple issues.

In addition to the regular irritants found in the winter months, there are several factors that can increase the need for regular cleanings:

  • cigarette or cigar smoke
  • water contamination or damage to the home or HVAC system
  • home renovation or remodeling projects
  • mold issues

How can we help?

When a homeowner calls asking about our duct cleaning process it gives us the opportunity to talk about what we do and how we do it. Below we've listed some steps SERVPRO of West Beaver County uses during a routine Duct Cleaning Process:

  • Patented equipment includes using air powered agitation systems which automatically adapt to the duct shape, removing debris and filth.
  • A powerful push-pull air delivery and collection system transfers the debris from the duct to a   container
  • Clean air is filtered through a HEPA filtration, removing 99.97% of particles before it returns to air-wash the duct
  • Filters will either be cleaned or replaced to remove any odor and dirt

There's more...It can save you money!

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 25 to 40 percent of the energy used for heating or cooling a home is wasted. Contaminants in the heating and cooling system cause it to work harder and shorten the life of your system. Although filters are used, the heating and cooling system still gets dirty through normal use.

When an HVAC system is clean, it doesn't have to work as hard to maintain the temperature you desire. As a result, less energy is used, leading to improved cost-effectiveness.
